VR training helps NZ prison inmates into jobs

A virtual reality training programme delivered across New Zealand correctional facilities is helping inmates build job-ready skills before release. The initiative, run through SkillsVR in partnership with the Ministry of Social Development and Ara Poutama Aotearoa (Department of Corrections), uses Wi-Fi-independent VR headsets to replicate real workplace environments, teaching practical and soft skills like communication, conflict resolution, and Site Safe certification. More than 250 VR sessions have run so far, producing over 140 digital employability badges and 139 Site Safe Passports. Over 70% of participants who completed Site Safe certification have gone on to secure employment post-release. Regional Reintegration Manager Richie Ah-Loo said the programme has visibly changed how participants engage with staff, describing newfound openness and pride in their progress. The programme is now expanding into logistics, healthcare, hospitality and security training. It is a strong example of NZ's training-and-simulation sector delivering measurable social outcomes, not just novelty.
